Anti-plagiarism

1. The journal "Verba. Northwest Linguistic Journal" adheres to the standards of editorial ethics in accordance with international practice of editing, reviewing, publishing and authorship of scientific publications and the recommendations of the Committee of Publication Ethics (COPE).

2. The journal "Verba. Northwest Linguistic Journal" uses the "Antiplagiat" system (antiplagiat.ru) to detect plagiarism, incorrect borrowing, attempts to bypass the detection of plagiarism and incorrect borrowing.

3. The editors consider the following as unacceptable practice:

 – copying the work of another person without indicating his authorship, linking to the source and using quotation marks;

 – an attempt by paraphrasing, changing the order of sentences, synonymous substitutions to bypass the possibility of detecting incorrect borrowings using automatic plagiarism search systems and document analysis;

 – the use of elements of another person's work, for example, a figure, table or paragraph, without attribution, without expressing gratitude, reference to the source or using quotation marks;

 – verbatim copying and paraphrasing of their own works (self-plagiarism) without proper grounds.

4. Authors submitting their articles for publication in the journal "Verba. Northwest Linguistic Journal", guarantee that:

 – their works are original (have not been previously published in other publications in their current or similar form);

 – the articles are not under consideration in the editors of other editions;

 – all possible conflicts of interest related to copyright and publication of the materials in question are resolved;

 – the publication does not infringe any existing copyright; in the event of such violations, the publisher will be reimbursed for damages.  Authors must obtain permission from the copyright owner to use elements of their work.

5. If the work proposed for publication uses elements of earlier publications,

 – the author is obliged to refer to the earlier work;

 – the author is obliged to substantiate the connection between the new work and earlier publications (novelty, development of an idea, etc.).

6. As a rule, the editorial staff of the magazine "Verba. Northwest Linguistic Journal" rejects articles, the originality of which, according to the automatic system used by the editors, is less than 80%.  However, this indicator is not the only one.  The article may be rejected on other grounds related to data indicating its unoriginal/unscrupulous  author.

7. In the event of controversial issues related to plagiarism, the Editorial Board adheres to the standards of academic ethics, protects the reputation of the authors and takes all cases of plagiarism seriously. When such situations arise, a system of procedures is used to respond to possible accusations of plagiarism:

 – requesting complete information from authors of questionable publications;

 – requesting information from copyright owners;

 – an objective expert assessment of dubious publications, including with the involvement of the journal's reviewers.

8. In case of confirmation of the incorrectness of borrowings (facts of plagiarism), the Editorial Board:

 – rejects the article;

 – ceases cooperation with authors convicted of plagiarism and reviewers who cover up plagiarism.

In case of detection of incorrect borrowings in previously published articles, the facts of duplication of publications, the article is withdrawn (retracted). 

9. The editors do not discuss cases of alleged plagiarism with persons not directly related to it.
