The compound constituent smart- vs the new sense of the adjective umnyj in the modern Russian language observed as elements of text and dictionary

The article deals with the problems of describing the semantics, functioning and lexicographic representation of the lexical unit smart- (which was borrowed from the English language and is used as a constituent part of Russian compound words) in comparison with its synonym – the adjective umnyj which acquires a new meaning in the modern Russian language. In the course of the research, the functioning of the mentioned units in various types of discourse was demonstrated, their dictionary presence was analyzed, the graphic variability of the component smart- was revealed, the lexical-semantic structure of both units was shown, and their definitions were formulated in order to compile the dictionary entries, so that they can be published in the neological electronic retrieval database of the Institute for Linguistic Studies. In the final part of the article, a conclusion based on a detailed analysis is made about the sufficient degree of language adaptation of both borrowed units in the modern Russian language at the orthographic, grammatical, lexical-semantic and communicative-discursive levels, for both the lexeme umnyj in a new sense and its synonym smart- are distinguished by high usage and productivity, as well as demonstrate polysemy and rich paradigmatic and syntagmatic connections.
